THE CHALLENGE:
Cable Depot FZCO, a long-standing distributor of low-current system cables, operates from a 3,600 sqm warehouse in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone. Like many growing businesses, they faced an increasingly common problem: how to increase storage capacity without expanding their physical footprint.
With nearly 95% of their stock locations already occupied, the existing metal shelving system was limiting efficiency. It failed to take advantage of vertical space, left gaps between items, and made the picking process time-consuming and inconsistent. Adding to the challenge was the need to transition to a new system in just a few days—without halting deliveries. The entire operation needed to be dismantled, reinstalled, and fully functional again almost immediately.
THE SOLUTION:
To solve this, Cable Depot partnered with SPAN to implement a customized Storeganizer solution designed to streamline their small parts storage. The installation included a 40-meter-long row comprising of 14 Storeganizer bays, carefully configured based on item dimensions, turnover frequency, and ergonomic access zones.
Working closely together, SPAN and Cable Depot ensured that high-frequency SKUs were placed at optimal heights, and that every inch of space was put to use—both horizontally and vertically. Despite the time constraints, the project was completed seamlessly thanks to strong collaboration between SPAN’s team and Cable Depot’s operations staff.
THE OUTCOME:
The results were immediate and measurable. The Storeganizer system improved the small parts storage density by over 30%, freeing up enough space to accommodate 84 additional pallet positions—without expanding the warehouse footprint. Overall storage capacity rose by up to 10%.
Operational performance also saw a dramatic improvement. Picking times were reduced by 30 to 40%, search times dropped by over 50%, and the likelihood of mispicks was significantly reduced. The sliding pocket system improved ergonomics for warehouse staff, reducing the need for bending or stretching, while the more compact picking zones cut travel distances by up to 40%.
Beyond efficiency gains, the new layout brought order and clarity to the warehouse, creating a cleaner, more organized environment. Buoyed by the success of the installation, Cable Depot is already considering expanding the Storeganizer system further, with plans for one or two additional rows of 50 meters each.
